Experiment gone bad...for now

Shortly after my last blog posting I decided to just go for it and yank the feeding tube. To make a long story short, the I just put the tube back in. Grant tried to eat from his bottle a little bit (less than an ounce) but each time he did he would breathe really hard and sometimes throw up. We decided that it is most important for him to be able to get enough air and not get so tired from sucking. (Not that he was really sucking his bottle that much anyway.) He's asleep right now from crying so hard while we put the tube in and retaped his face. I think we are going to wait to see the doctor and find out if his iron stats have improved before we yank the tube again. That way his heart should be pumping the right amount of oxygen and it won't be a heart issue anymore, just a hunger strike. :)

Ahhh! I can only imagine how difficult it is to keep trying ways to feed Grant seeing his pain. Acid reflux is very difficult to watch your baby go through. I am learning so much about the strength God gives us through the two of you. Thank you for sharing Grant and your hearts with us through your writings. We are always praying for you and asking our God to give Grant's body peace.

I can only imagine what you are going through! I would have probably done the same thing. It's so hard being parents. It's a good thing we are not in it alone. Grab the hand of Jesus, hold tight and walk along with Him through all this. I know it's hard at times to remember to reach out to Him, but He's there. You are beautiful people.

Shannon and Jim,
Di and Brad said it best on 1-25. Listen to all the medical advice, then do what you think is right. You are smart people----and parents.

It is very hard to know what is the right thing to do (and the right thing changes as you gather more info / experience), but with your parental instincts and the help of God, you two will give Grant the best care possible.

Give that Gorgeous Grant a big hug for me!!

Still praying,
Janet

Hi Shannon,
I probably would have tried that very thing myself. In fact, when Abby was telling me about the discomfort the tube was causing him I thought they should just pull the tube. Well, all thoughts do not come from God, I guess. Anyway, sometimes you just do not know unless you try!!:- ). You will get Grant figured out, even with his medical conditions. You guys are in my thoughts & prayers. Melody (Abby's mom).

Shannon and Jim--
I continue to be amazed by your strength and your courage--on all levels of this experience.
Hang in there!

My little Ben also has really bad acid reflux too. Mostly due to his small size at birth (one pound, 13 ounces) and his breathing issues(chronic lung disease.) He would grunt, turn red, spit up through his nose, arch his back, and stop breathing. It is sooooo difficult to see your child in pain! We have tried so many things to help ease his pain. We elevated his crib on one side and that seemed to help. We also hold him upright for 30 minutes after he eats. The zantac took a long time too work..but did kick in eventually. But above all...go with your gut! You guys know whats best for Grant!!!
