Little Grant has had a tough time since my ankle surgery. He does not like transitions, whether it be from the highchair to the stroller or from inside to outside. Once he's there, he's happy; he just doesn't like the process. That has made the past six days and multiple care givers really hard for him. I'm so thankful for all the people that have volunteered to care for Grant. It is unfortunate that it is so confusing for him. I wish he could just enjoy all the love that is being poured out on to him.
Last night grandma and grandpa had Grant over for a sleepover. (Thank you, thank you!!) Unfortunately, he woke up quite a few times in the night and would only stop crying if they would hold his hand. So, around 4:30 they brought him in their bed and he finally fell asleep on his back with one grandparent's pinkie in each hand.

Shannon-Our 7 year old Merredith still does not transition well. It is a control issue and we have decided that it is just part of her personality and that it will not change until she is old enough to decide to help herself make it change. It causes our family stress, but we are thankful that we do not have the other types of stressors that other families may have...Merre has difficulty transitioning from school lunch to recess (for example). There is great deal of resistance, and it requires a great deal of parental patience. You already have that...We always joke that we could say "Merre, c'mon, let's go to Toys R Us! Mom and dad are giving you a $1,000 gift certificate to buy anything you want!" and she would start to whine, and throw herself on the floor and say "NOOOOOhhhhh. I don't want to gooooooohhhhhh." We use a timer, a reward system, and a lot of 10 minute warnings. Let us know if you need advice as you go along your journey. We are well equipped for this one!
Change and transitions are often difficult for adults! God bless your little Grant. The visual of him needing to connect by holding a hand is sweet (but probably not for those at 4 a.m.!!!)

Uh, oh, another finger-holder in the making. :o) Sounds like Zach!! He's our cuddler, now...and has finally let go of our fingers to fall asleep at night!! We are praying for Shannon to be up and around, soon. And for Grant to enjoy the limited separation from Momma!
Shan,
It certainly took us back 29 years - you were in our bed quite often. Wish I had a picture of the three of us last night - Grant is such a blessing!
Love,
Mom xoxo
Hi Shannon,
Our grandson is autistic and transition is a BIG thing for him.
He likes the familiarity of his domain. In reality, all children struggle with this in certain areas of their life. Don't we all?
I would have loved to see a picture of Grandma and Grampa with Grant sleeping between them, hand in hand...(what a sweet picture that would be)
Keep faithing, trusting, believing....There are beautiful days ahead for all of you.
Love,
S & R
